Ancient Peru's enigmatic linear achievement dominates the small town of Nazca.
You'd be forgiven for thinking that this desolate pampa holds little of interest. Indeed, the sun-bleached expanse was ignored by the outside world until 1939, when the Nazca Lines were discovered. Today, squillions of travelers show up to Nazca each year to ponder the sandy mystery.
Travelers taking a flight on a light aircraft to see the Nazca Lines should check that their airline has a good safety record. There have been a number of incidents in the area lately, including a crash in which five French tourists were killed.
