Chilled-out and hassle-free, Hyderabad combines Hindu and Islamic traditions.
An important centre of Islamic culture in a Hindu-dominated state, Hyderabad is southern India's counterpart to the Mughal splendour of Delhi, Agra and Fatehpur Sikri. Quick to embrace technology, Hyderabad is also known as 'Cyberabad', as a growing class of techies and cyber kings make their mark.
Hyderabad suffered a series of bomb blasts in August 2007 that killed more than 40 people. Security in the city has since been intensified and travellers should be aware of the potential for disruptions to travel plans.
The risk of politically motivated violence in India is ever-present. Although far from the trouble on the Pakistan border, Jammu and Kashmir, travellers to Hyderabad should avoid large public gatherings or demonstrations, especially during religious festivals. Travellers should be aware, too, of attacks on public transport facilities.
