A Top Day in Tegucigalpa

With a day stretching in front in Tegucigalpa, I amble to the central park to soak up the mood of the city. As with most Latin American metropolises, this is prime people-watching territory. There's the bustle of vendors, the smooch of courting couples, the call of preachers - and the lurk of an occasional pickpocket. You do need to keep your wits about you but this unfolding city scene could keep me transfixed for whole mornings at a time. The snarled-up rush-hour traffic now passed, a trip to the surprisingly accessible surrounding hills catches my fancy. Taking a bus to the less-visited alpine town of Santa Lucia, I take in the magnificent vistas of the city sprawl through the pine trees. The enchanting colonial church here is always worth another look. Back in the city, my stomach is telling me to head to Colonia Palmira, the city's gourmet district. Once I work out whether I fancy an Argentine grill or French bistro, I tuck in. Then it's dancing time. While Tegucigalpa is never going to pave the way in nightclubbing fashion, there are some fun options. Again, many of them are in Colonia Palmira. A sucker for the una-dos-tres of the salsa beat, I head to Sabor Cubano, whiling the night away until , when the mayor dictates that the clubs must close and I should go to bed.
