Budget travelers can get by on US$10.00 per day in Guyana; while those staying in more comfortable hotels and eating at restaurants should expect to spend around US$30.00 per day. A more upscale visit will require US$40.00 and upwards.
Credit cards are accepted at Georgetown's better hotels and restaurants, though not at gas stations, most stores or anywhere else. Credit card advances can be made only at the Scotiabank.
Notes come in denominations of $20, $100, $500 and $1000.
Coins come in denominations of $10, $5 and $1.
Cash can be exchanged in banks (Mon- Fri - ) and cambios (exchange houses; Mon-Fri - ), which offer better rates and less red tape than banks. Sometimes you can change cash unofficially at hotels for 10% or 15% less.
The Guyanese dollar is more or less stable, but it's declining in line with domestic inflation. Guyanese dollars add up to large amounts - a Coke is around G$100.00 , for example - so don't faint when you see meals costing thousands of dollars on local menus.
