Rainforests, elephants and lazy, lazy beaches.
Outside the swelling and modernised cities of Cameroon (Cameroun), rainforests stretch from the Atlantic Ocean, giving way to savannah and semi-desert in the north. Elephants and antelope congregate by the hundreds in some of Africa's best wildlife parks, and beachcombers laze on long, isolated beaches.
The areas bordering the Central African Republic and Chad should be avoided due to banditry. Bandits are also active in Adamaoua and provinces to the north, travellers should maintain high levels of caution. Roads in the southwest of the country are subject to armed criminals, as are northern routes out of Yaoundé, Douala and Mt Cameroon. Seek local advice before travelling by road.
While Nigeria is now pulling out of the disputed Bakassi Peninsula region, there is still potential for conflict. The border with the Republic of Congo is occasionally closed and overland journeys can be difficult at the best of times.
