A Top Day in Brisbane

My favourite place to start a Brisbane Saturday is Fatboy's Cafe in Fortitude Valley, which serves up enormous piles of eggs and bacon for those who feel the need to soak up Friday night's overdose of cocktails. Suitably fortified, it's time to browse the nearby Brunswick Street markets in search of the perfect vintage handbag or an offbeat piece of artwork. Then I whistle up some Brisbane mates (plus their kids) and jump on the City Cat at Riverside, whizzing past the Botanic Gardens and under the Captain Cook Bridge to the Streets Beach on South Bank, Brisbane's answer to a true-blue surf beach (minus the waves, unfortunately). We sip super smoothies, munch hot dogs and sun ourselves on the imported sand before taking a dip in the pool and clambering over the climbing gyms. Tired but happy children head home while I get changed for a more grown-up night out - a meal overlooking the river at elegant Circa restaurant on Adelaide Street. After that we take a stroll back up to the Valley for cocktails (Friday night is by now just a distant memory) at Sunbar Restaurant & Lounge, followed by some very silly dancing amid the 70s decor at Fringe Bar.
