Salta: When to Go

The best time to visit the parks and valleys around Salta is between April and October. One of the region's biggest attractions, Tren a las Nubes (Train to the Clouds), doesn't operate during the summer months (December to February); regional parks and valleys are often inaccessible too, even 4WD vehicles are no sure bet in the heavy summer rains.

Weather

Salta is warm for much of the year, with average daily summer temperatures of around 27°C (80°F) and peaks of 40°C (104°F). The mercury hovers around a mild 20°C (68°F) in winter. More tropical than other regions, the summer months (December to February) bring heavy downpours which often prevent access to parks and valleys. Sub-zero temperatures are not uncommon in winter, thanks to Salta's high altitude and proximity to the equator.
