Mendoza makes an excellent base for adventure travelers wanting to sample the delights of the region. Whether it be skiing the powdery slopes of Los Penitentes, heading to Diamante river for white-water rafting in the south, or ascending 6962m (22841ft) Cerro Aconcagua, the Americas' highest peak.
Climbers should head for Aconcagua, west of Mendoza. Agencies organize climbing expeditions; only highly experienced climbers should consider climbing the summit without the safety of one of these tours.
White-water rafting is becoming increasingly popular on the rivers that descend from the Andean divide; try the Río Mendoza or Río Diamante, near San Rafael.
Los Penitentes has the best skiing near Mendoza. It's 165km (103mi) west of the city, and offers downhill and cross-country skiing at an altitude of 2580m (8465ft). The vertical drop on some of its 21 runs is more than 700m (2297ft).
