Summer (December to February) is usually the most comfortable time to visit El Calafate, but warm clothing and proper gear are imperative in any season. January and February are the most popular and costliest months to visit. A winter tourism push may eventually create a year-round visitor season. If you're planning to head out to the Perito Moreno Glacier, remember that the weather can be severe at any time of year.
El Calafate has a mostly dry summer (December to February) with lots of sunshine and average temperatures of around 18°C (65°F); nights, however, can drop to a chilly 7°C (45°F). The mercury can drop to below freezing in winter, with Antarctic winds playing a strong part in keeping temperatures low. Bedsocks are advised all year-round!
