A Top Day in Córdoba

Córdoba has some of Argentina's finest colonial architecture, so exploring the buildings of the Manzana Jesuítica tops my list of things to see. Then I'd indulge in a little relaxation and people-watching in Plaza San Martín, followed by a stroll around the shopping streets of Obispo Trejo, Deán Funes and 9 de Julio. The mall-style stores can get a bit generic, but the street musicians that set up along its walks usually make things interesting. North of 25 de Mayo, the street San Martín is off-limits to cars during the day, and the vibe is much more organic than in the other shopping areas. I could wander this street for hours, searching for random buys in the many hardware, fabric and knickknack stores. For lunch, I'll head straight to La Vieja Esquina for empanadas and locro (a traditional Argentine stew). It's a Saturday (of course), so in the evening I'll head over to the outstanding weekend Feria Artesanal, one of the best craft fairs in the country. Finally, I'll catch a show at the beautiful Teatro San Martín before heading up to La Nieta 'e la Pancha, one of the cities most imaginative and atmospheric restaurants, for a tasty plate of homemade pasta and a fine bottle of Argentine malbec.
