The most fascinating country you never thought of visiting.
Once on a par with neighbouring Morocco as a travel hot spot, Algeria's decade-long civil war scared off all but the most foolhardy travellers. Now that the violence has subsided, a trickle of visitors is returning to explore one of Africa's most diverse and fascinating countries.
There is an ongoing threat of terrorism and civil unrest in Algeria, and incidents seem to be on the rise. Two suicide bomb attacks near Algiers in August killed more than 40 people. In May, over 70 police officers were injured and 150 people arrested in the town of Oran after violent clashes. In January, a suicide bomb attack in Naciria killed four people and injured at least 20. Travellers should exercise a high level of caution and monitor the news for any developments. Public protests and disturbances should be avoided.
In the desert regions of the south tourists are strongly advised to travel with a reputable tourist agency and it is compulsory for self-drive tourists to be accompanied by an Algerian guide.
